Spain Updates Road Signs for Modern Modes of Transport

New Road Reform: Spain Updates Rules for Cyclists and Pedestrians

New standards for road signs have come into effect in the country. The changes affect visual design. New symbols have been introduced for various road users.

As of July 1, 2025, new rules regarding road signs have come into effect across Spain. Royal Decree 465/2025 and an updated list of traffic signs have been implemented. These measures are aimed at making road navigation clearer and more aligned with current realities.

The country’s General Directorate of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico, DGT) reported that the changes were approved by the government. The agency emphasized that the new signs take into account the emergence of new types of vehicles, particularly personal mobility devices, and reflect current road situations.

As part of the reform, the images on the signs were redesigned, their visibility improved, and outdated symbols removed. Special attention was given to sustainability and the use of inclusive visual language.

One of the innovations is the S-15e sign. It is a blue square featuring a white vertical stripe crossed by a red horizontal one, along with silhouettes of a pedestrian and a bicycle. This design has led to questions among drivers and other road users.

Following the introduction of the new sign in public spaces, many users expressed confusion about its meaning. Social media posts noted that the image may not be immediately clear. Some suggested the sign requires cyclists to dismount when crossing the area, while others criticized its lack of clarity.

The Main Directorate of Traffic has clarified that the S-15e sign indicates a section of road that is closed to through traffic for vehicles but open to pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore, if a driver sees this sign, they should know that access is only allowed for the specified categories of road users.

The updated catalog of road signs is designed to improve safety and make navigation easier for everyone using modern means of transportation. Authorities expect that the new standards will help reduce misunderstandings and accidents.
