Why Your Car Air Conditioner May Stop Cooling During the Summer in Spain

Qué hacer si hace calor en el coche: soluciones prácticas y consejos

A faulty air conditioner can become a real issue during the peak of the Spanish summer. We examine why cooling systems fail, how to troubleshoot and fix problems yourself, and what experts recommend for safe driving in the heat.

Summer temperatures in Spain often reach extreme levels, making a functioning car air conditioner not just a comfort feature but a necessity for drivers and passengers. When the cooling system stops working, trips become a real ordeal, especially in 40-degree heat.

Experts highlight several of the most common reasons why an air conditioner might fail. The primary one is a lack of refrigerant. Over time, its level drops, and the system loses its ability to cool the air effectively. If a recharge has not been done for several years, it’s very likely this is the source of the problem.

Another frequent issue is compressor failure. This component is responsible for circulating the refrigerant and creating the necessary pressure. If the compressor breaks down, the system stops producing cold air. There can also be fan malfunctions, caused by both electrical and mechanical failures.

Sometimes, the problem is less severe: clogged filters, evaporator, or condenser. Dust and dirt accumulating in these parts obstruct normal air circulation. In many cases, a thorough cleaning is enough to restore the air conditioner’s normal function without the need to visit a service center.

In extreme heat, it’s important not only to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the car, but also to follow safety recommendations. Spanish road authorities advise using sunshades on the windshield, wearing polarized sunglasses, and keeping an eye on the side curtains to avoid obstructing your view. Drivers are recommended to stop more often for rest and drink cool water to prevent dehydration.

Special attention should be paid to the technical condition of your vehicle. Regularly checking tire pressure helps avoid premature wear, which can be accelerated by high temperatures. It’s also important to monitor engine temperature and avoid overheating.

If your air conditioner struggles to clear foggy windows, you can use a simple home remedy. A mixture of vinegar and water applied to the inside of the glass helps quickly eliminate condensation and improve visibility. Just spray the solution on and wipe the surface with a soft cloth.

In most cases, air conditioner issues can be resolved independently, especially if it’s a matter of dirty filters or a clogged evaporator. However, if you suspect more serious malfunctions, such as a faulty compressor or refrigerant leak, it’s best to consult a specialist. Timely maintenance of the cooling system will not only ensure comfort during trips, but also increase road safety in Spain during the hottest season.
