Spanish winemakers are once again in the international spotlight. In a recent global ranking of the world’s top wineries, two Spanish companies secured places in the top ten. Marqués de Murrieta from La Rioja and González Byass from Cádiz have reaffirmed Spain’s position as one of the leaders of the world wine industry.
Marqués de Murrieta is located in the heart of La Rioja, a region long associated with quality wines. The winery’s history dates back to the mid-19th century, when entrepreneur Luciano de Murrieta laid the foundation for the region’s first fine wine production. Today, its Finca Ygay estate spans 300 hectares of vineyards, and the 19th-century castle has become a symbol of both tradition and innovation. In 2023, their Marqués de Murrieta Reserva 2018 was named among the world’s best wines, further strengthening the winery’s reputation.
González Byass, based in Jerez de la Frontera, also boasts a rich history. Established in 1835 by Manuel María González, the winery gained international fame thanks to the Tío Pepe brand—the world’s most famous fino. Each year, more than 200,000 visitors come here to discover the architecture, history, and winemaking secrets behind the famed sherries. González Byass is the only winery from the Marco de Jerez region to make it into the global top ten.
Both wineries not only preserve centuries-old traditions but also embrace modern technologies, allowing them to remain at the forefront of popularity. Their success on the international stage highlights the high standard of Spanish winemaking and its significance for global gastronomy. Spain continues to impress wine experts and enthusiasts alike, reaffirming its status as a country with a unique wine heritage.
