AEMET has issued weather warnings across eight Spanish autonomous communities for Wednesday. Orange-level rain alerts cover parts of Andalusia and Valencia, with Murcia also under an alert. Experts advise closing windows and drawing blinds to keep out rain and retain heat.

Locally very heavy downpours are forecast along the coasts of Almería and Murcia. Thunderstorms are also possible around the Strait of Gibraltar and in Ceuta. AEMET says the most intense rain could arrive late in the day. The warnings fall under Meteoalerta, the agency’s national plan for forecasting and monitoring adverse weather. It provides information for up to 72 hours and continues to track conditions once an event begins.

The agency has activated warnings in eight autonomous communities. Orange-level rainfall alerts cover Almería, parts of the Region of Murcia and the Valencian coast, according to the forecast; other areas face lower-level alerts. The source also reports rain warnings in Cádiz and Granada. Alicante and the Canary Islands are listed as well. AEMET publishes warnings and forecasts at national, autonomous-community, city, provincial and island levels. Forecasters analyse numerical models before producing textual forecasts and warning tables.

Ceuta is among the places named in the rainfall warning. The city also featured in earlier migration reporting about returns to Morocco. AEMET also forecasts thunderstorms in Cádiz and Ceuta, while low-temperature alerts are in place in Zamora and Guadalajara. The agency’s national forecast system brings together maps, active-warning tables and written forecasts. Products are available for autonomous cities and islands, as well as mainland provinces.

The unsettled conditions extend beyond the warning areas. AEMET expects very cloudy skies across the south and southeast of the mainland and the Balearic Islands, with locally heavy showers possible on the Alborán coast and in the Strait. Weaker rain may reach the Bético ranges, eastern Castilla-La Mancha, Aragón and Catalonia. In the Pyrenees, precipitation could fall as snow above 1,500 metres. AEMET’s forecast tables show hourly accumulated precipitation for the following hour: a value listed at 09:00, for example, refers to rainfall between 09:00 and 10:00.

Temperatures are forecast to fall across the south, with sharper declines in the southeast, Extremadura and the northwest. Minimum temperatures are also expected to drop in most areas. Frost is forecast in northern mountain ranges and on the northern plateau, as well as in Sierra Nevada and occasionally on the southern plateau. Some points in Castilla y León could reach -6ºC. AEMET’s national forecast includes two-day tables of minimum and maximum temperatures for major municipalities.

For homes exposed to rain and colder air, experts recommend shutting windows and drawing curtains. Closing blinds can also help keep out water and retain indoor warmth. Rooms can be ventilated according to local conditions before the windows are shut again.
