Begoña Gómez and Cristina Álvarez will face trial over alleged influence peddling and misuse of public funds. In an order dated 21 September 2026, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado sent Pedro Sánchez's wife and her Moncloa adviser to a jury court. The case centres on a university chair at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the alleged private use of university software, and a state-paid assistant.
The decision also brings a direct financial risk. Gómez and Álvarez may be held jointly responsible for compensation of more than 113,509.32 euros claimed by the UCM. Peinado has ordered an inquiry into Gómez's financial capacity and requested her five most recent income tax returns from the Agencia Tributaria.
