Bizum handles about 2.5 million transactions a day in Spain, according to figures attributed to the Banco de España. Labels such as «donación» or «nómina» can have tax implications if transfers are not properly supported.

Around 2.5 million Bizum transactions take place each day, according to figures from the Banco de España. In Spain, Bizum ranks second among daily payment methods after cash and leads payments between individuals and mobile payments.

Transfers between people are among the service’s common uses. Customers also use it to pay online and in physical shops. A payment description can help the Agencia Tributaria identify what a transaction represents, though Hacienda may interpret the label differently from the sender’s intention. The description records the stated purpose of the transfer. It should also be read alongside the transaction itself and any documents that support it.

Some descriptions carry specific tax implications. A transfer marked «donación» may fall under Inheritance and Gift Tax and may need to be declared. A «préstamo» must be reported to Hacienda and supported by a contract; without one, it may be treated as undeclared income. In either case, the label alone does not provide the full context of the transaction.

Using «alquiler» can point to property income that must be declared in the Renta. «Nómina» is subject to IRPF withholding. Between private individuals, that label could be understood as undeclared income or work without a proper employment basis if no real work relationship exists.

«Deuda» refers to repaying borrowed money. Repeated use of the label without evidence of the original loan could cause problems.

Other descriptions can also affect how Hacienda views a transfer. «Comisión» and «intermediación» can be associated with professional activity. «Apuestas» may be treated as a capital gain from gambling. A transfer marked «pago de servicios» may be considered taxable economic activity. In each case, a payment’s tax character depends on the transaction itself, not simply on the wording entered in the Bizum description.
