Fans got the first major event of the San Sebastián Festival when Brad Pitt arrived unexpectedly at his hotel. Set to present En el corazón de la bestia on Wednesday 23, he reached the city on Sunday and spent about half an hour greeting people outside the Hotel María Cristina.
Pitt walked the full length of the barrier, taking selfies and signing autographs, then returning to the crowd several times before going inside.
The festival had sent accredited media a last-minute update saying Pitt would reach the hotel at 12:15. Word spread across San Sebastián, and hundreds of residents gathered at the entrance in strong sunshine.
The actor arrived about an hour later than announced. Those who stayed were not put off by the delay. Pitt stepped from the car in grey trousers and a purple polo shirt, with a blue suede jacket. He also wore yellow trainers, sunglasses and a dark blue baseball cap backwards.
He first greeted festival director José Luis Rebordinos and posed for photographers. Rather than walk straight into the hotel, he moved along the entire perimeter where fans were waiting.
He responded to people calling his name. Pitt signed items and paused for selfies, then continued along the barriers. After climbing the hotel steps, he turned once more to offer the crowd a smile and farewell.
The scene showed what a star can do with a simple public gesture. Pitt's scheduled festival appearance is tied to the presentation of En el corazón de la bestia on Wednesday 23. The official San Sebastián Festival programme lists the film in the Sección Oficial, but out of competition, so it will not contend for the basic prize.
David Ayer directed the 101-minute film, which the San Sebastián Festival lists as starring Brad Pitt, with J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe also in the cast. Pitt plays James Belmont, a special-forces officer who survives a crash in Alaska with his military dog Odin and fights to stay alive in the wilderness.
EFE reported that Pitt previously visited San Sebastián in 2009, when he attended a screening of Malditos bastardos with Quentin Tarantino. The festival programme also scheduled his press activities for Wednesday 23 September, including a press conference at 12:30.
The festival has not said how Pitt will spend the three days before the event. His early arrival created a public moment but did not bring any announced change to the official presentation timetable.
His partner, Inés de Ramón, travelled with him. While attention focused on Pitt outside the hotel, she left the car more discreetly, wearing a military-style cap and sunglasses before entering the building directly.
The visit also contrasted with the previous festival edition. In 2025, Angelina Jolie, Pitt's former partner and the mother of his children, attended San Sebastián but did not stay in the Spanish city for even one day. She showed the same kind of closeness to people during her brief visit.
There was no formal announcement about Pitt's private schedule in the city, and no further programme details were disclosed. What people could see defined the arrival: a major film star came before his presentation and chose to spend thirty minutes with the public, rather than limit the encounter to photographers at the hotel entrance.
RTVE and EFE had already identified Pitt as one of the central attractions of the 2026 festival, a view also reflected in El País coverage. That helps explain why his appearance at the María Cristina drew immediate attention.
The festival audience did not get a staged appearance or a paid brand activation. It got direct access at the barriers and a sustained response from the actor himself. Younger performers with large social-media followings often protect every public pose behind a commercial arrangement. Pitt's San Sebastián arrival offered the opposite example.
His decision to complete the full circuit and make the crowd part of the event stood out more than his clothing or the delay.
