BYD has cut the price of its Dolphin Surf electric hatchback to €12,904 in Spain, less than a Dacia Sandero. The €7,300 discount puts the Dolphin Surf among the country’s cheapest electric cars and brings it into direct competition with petrol models. To reach this price, buyers must combine all available discounts, including government incentives and BYD promotions, and accept specific financing terms. Without them, the Dolphin Surf Active’s list price is much higher, with industry sources citing €19,990 before deductions.
The offer covers the Dolphin Surf Active trim, which comes with multiple airbags and 15-inch steel wheels, plus LED daytime running lights. Inside, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster sits alongside a 10.1-inch touchscreen. The screen supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while navigation is also included, along with a range of driver assistance systems. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping join emergency braking; the package also includes a rear camera. Vegan leather upholstery and keyless entry are standard. Independent reviews cite a 30 kWh battery and output of about 88 hp. They put the WLTP range at roughly 220 km, making it a strong contender among entry-level EVs in Spain.
The Dolphin Surf Active uses a 65 kW (88 hp) electric motor and a 30 kWh LFP battery, delivering 175 Nm of torque to the front wheels. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.1 seconds and has a top speed of 150 km/h. Its official WLTP range is 220 kilometers, enough for most daily commutes and city trips, though the car is not intended for long-distance travel. It also qualifies for Spain’s 0 Emissions badge, which brings urban driving perks. Higher trims have larger batteries and more range, but the current deal applies to the Active version.
BYD is aiming to make electric cars affordable for everyday buyers. The Dolphin Surf’s sticker price before discounts is €20,140, but the current promotion, available through select dealers and tied to financing, cuts €7,236 from the total, bringing the price to €12,904. That undercuts other electric cars as well as many entry-level petrol models. But, as Russpain points out, the lowest advertised price assumes buyers meet all the conditions, including financing and eligibility for government subsidies, so it may not be available to everyone.
This isn’t the first time a Chinese automaker has disrupted Spain’s car market. As reported earlier, Lynk & Co’s hybrid SUV drew attention with strong sales and a competitive electric range, showing that buyers are looking for value and new technology.
For Spanish drivers, the Dolphin Surf’s offer includes equipment found in much pricier models and a range suited to most urban and suburban needs. The deal depends on availability and financing terms, but, and the promotion is not guaranteed. Buyers will need to check the details. Several Spanish automotive outlets note that the final price can change with dealer campaigns. Government programs and financing agreements also affect the amount at purchase.
BYD is betting that price and equipment will win over buyers who might otherwise choose a petrol car. By offering a well-equipped EV for less than even basic petrol models, the company is pressing established and new competitors to rethink their approach. If the Dolphin Surf’s sales match its ambition, Spain’s entry-level car market could see real change.
