The Best Summer Route in the Madrid Mountains: Cool Waterfalls and Forest Trails in Sierra de Guadarrama Park. Hidden in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains lies a scenic route to refreshing waterfalls and natural pools. Find out how to reach this oasis—a perfect escape from the summer heat—and which trails to choose for a family walk or a more challenging hike.

At the height of summer, when Madrid's heat becomes especially intense, many seek refuge in the cool mountain air. One of the most attractive destinations for such an escape is the hiking trail in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama), leading to the famous “Venus Baths” (Los Baños de Venus). This picturesque spot in the La Pedriza area (La Pedriza) draws visitors with its cascading crystal-clear waters and natural pools, surrounded by majestic granite cliffs.

The route offers several options, making it accessible to hikers of varying skill levels. There are two main starting points. The first is the Canto Cochino recreation area (Canto Cochino) in the municipality of Manzanares el Real. From here, a more challenging 16-kilometer circular path begins, requiring good physical fitness and taking about five to six hours to complete. The second, easier option starts from the Boca de Asno area (Boca de Asno) in the Montes de Valsaín. This six-kilometer trail (round trip) is ideal for family outings and usually takes about an hour and a half.

The trail passes through shady pine and oak forests, which is especially appealing on hot days. As you gain elevation, breathtaking views open up along the way. One of the main highlights is the Mirador de las Milaneras (Mirador de las Milaneras), a viewpoint offering a panoramic vista of La Pedriza’s rocky peaks. Small waterfalls can also be found along the route, particularly abundant during the rainy season.

The final stretch of the trail leads to the Arroyo de los Hoyos, where the 'Baños de Venus' can be found. Here, water cascades off the rocks to form a natural balcony with a secluded pool nestled between massive granite boulders. Although swimming in these waters has been officially prohibited since 2016 to preserve the unique ecosystem, the beauty of this spot fully justifies the effort it takes to get here. It is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

When planning a hike, especially along the longer route from Canto Cochino, it is recommended to set out as early as possible. Parking spots in this area fill up quickly, particularly on weekends. Keep in mind that the trail is not always clearly marked, especially along the final ascent, where navigation relies on stone cairns. Therefore, having a GPS device or map is advisable. Be sure to bring enough water and avoid hiking during unfavorable weather conditions such as strong winds, rain, or ice.

The route to the 'Baños de Venus' is more than just a walk—it's a true immersion into the unique natural landscape of the Madrid region. A blend of geological formations, flowing streams, and Mediterranean vegetation, including heather, juniper, and rockrose, makes this hike one of the most memorable. Regardless of the path chosen, visitors have the chance to discover one of the most beautiful and refreshing spots in the Sierra de Guadarrama, stunning at any time of year.
