The Girona river flooded areas beside its banks in Els Poblets on Monday. Forna recorded 702 litres per square metre since Sunday as Emergencies renewed the Es-Alert, ordering residents to stay indoors.

The town hall told residents not to cross flooded streets or paths, on foot or by car. It urged anyone facing an emergency to call 112.

The Girona river had overflowed at Els Poblets early on Monday, flooding areas close to its banks. The flooding followed intense rain overnight on 18 and 19 October, when Forna recorded around 550 litres per square metre in ten hours.

The renewed Es-Alert tells people along the southern Valencia coast and northern Alicante coast to stay indoors and avoid travel. Residents were also told to keep away from rivers and ravines. They were warned to stay clear of the coast, move to upper floors and avoid basements. The alert also told people to stay out of garages. AEMET maintained red warnings for exceptional rainfall and flash flooding, with forecasts of up to 300-400 litres per square metre in some areas.

Rainfall totals remain exceptional. Avamet reported 266 litres per square metre in Forna, in Atzúbia, on Sunday. By 7.35 on Monday, another 436 litres had fallen, bringing the total since Sunday to 702 litres. Separate 48-hour readings put Forna at about 720 litres per square metre. Pego recorded about 693 litres over the same period, including 638.5 litres in 24 hours.

The exceptional rain stretched across La Safor and Marina Alta. Avamet recorded 634.7 litres per square metre in Oliva. Vilallonga received 626.9 litres, while Real de Gandia recorded 612.2. The total in Barx was 592.1 litres. Vall d’Ebo recorded 577.3 litres, and Gandia had 550.4. AEMET called the episode in La Safor extraordinary. If final readings are confirmed, the agency said, it could be the area’s most significant rainfall event since November 1987.

Gandia and Dénia remain under the highest alert. AEMET’s red warning for the coastal area was due to run until 9.59, with accumulations potentially exceeding 200 litres in 12 hours. The Government’s delegate urged people in the Safor and Marina Alta to stay at home.

Transport links are also affected. Adif has kept the C1 València-Gandia line and the C2 València-Moixent line closed since Sunday afternoon. The DGT reports 15 closed secondary roads. They include the CV-723 in Dénia and the CV-670 in Oliva.

The UME is working in the affected area. Its Third Battalion has sent units from Valencia to Ibiza. It has also sent units to Mallorca. In separate coverage, RUSSPAIN reported warship movements off Ceuta.

Two women have died in separate incidents. In Sagunto, police sources said a woman was found dead on Sunday after disappearing while swimming with another person at a beach. The alert was raised at about 20.13, bringing in the Valencia Provincial Fire Consortium. In Cabrera de Mar, Barcelona, emergency services found the body of a woman swept away by a stream.

The Govern suspended classes in Mallorca and Ibiza. Formentera was also included. In the Pitiusas, Civil Protection activated the Es-Alert and ordered outdoor activities to stop. The orange warning there was due to remain in force until 14.59, with up to 160 litres possible in 12 hours. The worst of the weather had already passed across the islands.

In Almería, AEMET’s orange warning covered the west and the city until 5.59. The warning also covered eastern Almería. A yellow warning was set to begin in the interior at 16.00.

The Generalitat began using the alert system on Sunday, earlier in the episode than during the October 2024 DANA. Phones in Valencia received that warning at 20.11, when several towns were already flooded. The instability is now moving north-east, with rain forecast to continue overnight on Tuesday in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
