Eight people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a residential building in Tres Cantos, Madrid, in the early hours. Emergency services said three were taken to hospital for further evaluation, while five received medical attention at the scene and were released without serious complications.
The fire started shortly before 5 a.m. at No. 46 on Sector Descubridores, a densely populated area with commercial and residential properties. When firefighters from the Comunidad de Madrid arrived, flames were spreading across two balconies, and heavy smoke was pouring from the fifth-floor apartment where the fire began. Crews tackled the blaze from inside the building and from an external ladder.
Residents in adjacent and upper-floor apartments were initially told to remain inside for safety. As the situation developed, firefighters evacuated two people from a neighboring flat and another person from a different floor. The tenant of the affected apartment, asleep when the fire broke out, was among those rescued and was later taken to Ramón y Cajal Hospital. Two other residents were admitted to La Paz Hospital for observation because of the amount of smoke they had inhaled.
Seven fire crews and two command units were deployed. Local police worked alongside the Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional, while Protección Civil from Tres Cantos also assisted. Emergency services said none of the eight people treated suffered life-threatening injuries, although the three hospitalized residents were considered potentially serious cases because of the volume of smoke inhaled.
