From September 1, all urban bus journeys in El Puerto de Santa María will be free of charge, following a surge of complaints from passengers about extreme heat and inadequate air conditioning on the city’s aging fleet. The decision, announced by Mayor Germán Beardo, is intended to remove financial barriers to public transport and comes as the city faces mounting pressure to improve travel conditions during the hottest part of the year.
The new policy, described by Beardo as “historic,” is set to be approved by the city council and will take effect ahead of a long-awaited overhaul of the municipal bus service. The current contract for urban transport is still under tender, but the city has opted to introduce free rides immediately, aiming to encourage more residents to use public transport and ease the daily costs for local families.
