Eurowings Europe has introduced a new policy for its Spain-based pilots: captains who lose their flight license or medical certificate for reasons beyond their control can claim up to €225,000 in compensation. Copilots can receive up to €127,500. These rank among the highest payouts of their kind in European aviation, though the agreement sets detailed requirements and exclusions.
Spain's BOE registered and published the agreement on September 4, 2026, under document BOE-A-2026-18628. The 77-page PDF sets out the conditions. To qualify, a pilot must lose a license or medical certificate for at least twelve months, or permanently, and the loss cannot result from the pilot’s own actions. A claim is barred if non-prescribed drugs or alcohol are involved, or if deliberate behavior or voluntary risk-taking caused the incident. Compensation also falls as pilots approach retirement, tapering off over the last ten years of their careers.
The agreement also covers forced relocations. Pilots ordered by the company to move to a different base receive a €10,000 mobility payment, rising to €15,000 for a move to an island. If a pilot resigns or is dismissed for cause within three months of the transfer, they must return the payment. Exceptions cover certain objective dismissals and disciplinary firings later overturned.
Captains receive two lump-sum payments of €1,000, one in May and one in November. Copilots get €800 each time. If the company’s flexible pay scheme is not in place by July 2026, annual bonuses rise to €2,500 for captains and €2,000 for copilots, paid on the same schedule.
Pilots are guaranteed at least 30 calendar days of vacation each year. The agreement also reimburses some medical expenses: up to €350 for standard check-ups and €300 for additional reviews. It covers up to €2,000 for medical examinations required to regain flight fitness, provided no other airline pays the cost.
The agreement applies only to captains and copilots based in Spain. Its terms are retroactive to January 1, 2025, and run through December 31, 2027, although some clauses have separate timelines. The deal’s scale and detail set a new standard for pilot protections in Spain’s aviation sector.
Eurowings’ move comes as European employers use targeted incentives to compete for skilled workers. For example, Finland recently launched a campaign to recruit Spanish teachers with permanent contracts and competitive salaries, reflecting wider competition for talent across industries.
By linking compensation to strict eligibility rules and excluding cases of personal fault, Eurowings aims to support its pilots while guarding against abuse. The agreement offers rare security in a field where health or regulatory changes can end careers suddenly. The details matter as much as the headline figures.
