Emergency services responded to an accident at Renfe’s maintenance workshops in Villaverde, Madrid, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026. A subcontracted worker was killed and two others were injured during scheduled maintenance operations. A contemporaneous report by La Crónica de Badajoz identified the deceased worker as 22 years old. Investigations were launched to establish how the accident occurred.
Renfe said the deceased worker was employed by an external contractor providing services at the facility. The operator and the CC OO union classified the incident as a workplace accident, and Renfe said it was reviewing safety protocols. The two injured workers received medical attention; their conditions have not been disclosed. Investigators are expected to examine the work circumstances and the safety controls in place.

Eurostat data reported by El País put Spain’s fatal workplace-accident rate at 1.89 deaths per 100,000 employed people in 2024, up from 1.71 in 2023.
Provisional Ministry of Labour and Social Economy figures cited by El Mira recorded 498 occupational-accident deaths nationwide between January and August 2026: 405 during the working day and 93 while travelling between home and work. These national totals provide context for the Villaverde fatality but do not isolate Madrid, Renfe facilities or railway maintenance.
Workplace safety remains a critical issue in Spain’s industrial sector, particularly in high-risk environments such as rail maintenance. Spanish authorities have also been investigating other violent incidents, including the recent police response to a fatal case in Lleida, highlighting safety challenges across different sectors. The Villaverde investigation will establish the circumstances of the accident and inform any subsequent action at the facility.
