Bilbao airport stayed open overnight while emergency crews tackled a forest fire just four kilometers away in the San Isidro area of Derio. Despite the fire's proximity, airport operations were not interrupted, according to Aena and independent reports from Radio Nervión.
The absence of wind during the incident played a crucial role in slowing the fire's spread and allowed crews to maintain control over the perimeter.
Firefighters from Derio, Basauri, and Artaza, with support from the forest service, set up a perimeter to keep the fire contained. Their quick response kept the flames from reaching nearby infrastructure or homes. The focus was on stopping the fire's advance and securing the woodland, which was mostly pampas grass. This made the fire look dramatic but also allowed it to burn out quickly once crews arrived.
The Basque Government’s Security Department confirmed there were no injuries, evacuations, or damage to nearby facilities. The airport continued to operate normally, unlike in previous wildfires that have threatened transport hubs, such as a past incident near Bilbao airport.
