Renault unveils military hybrid 4 TROOP: drones, sensors, and a mobile command post. Renault and Thales have developed the 4 TROOP prototype—a hybrid off-roader for the armed forces with capabilities for drone operations and functioning as a mobile command post. Built on a civilian platform, the vehicle could set a new standard for military missions.
Renault has made an unexpected move towards the defense industry by presenting, in collaboration with Thales, the prototype of the 4 TROOP tactical vehicle. The newcomer debuted at the Eurosatory exhibition and immediately attracted the attention of military experts: this is a hybrid 4x4 capable of performing a wide range of tasks—from reconnaissance to supporting field operations.
The foundation of the 4 TROOP is not a unique military design, but a modified civilian Renault Rafale platform. This approach lowers production costs and simplifies maintenance, which is especially important for military needs. The electronics and architecture are borrowed from Renault’s production SUVs and commercial models, but are enhanced with special communications systems, sensors, and the ability to integrate with drones and robotics.
The main feature is the hybrid powertrain. It offers not only fuel savings, but also the ability to operate in a fully electric mode—critical for stealth operations and reconnaissance. At the same time, the gasoline engine ensures range for long missions. The Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system allows external devices to be powered, boosting the crew’s autonomy on the battlefield.
Inside the 4 TROOP, a mobile command post can be deployed, capable of coordinating the actions of units on the move, managing drones, and analyzing large volumes of data. The Thales Combat Digital Platform provides secure communications and integration with other military systems. According to Renault representatives, the vehicle can carry out reconnaissance, escort, logistics, critical infrastructure monitoring, and unmanned systems deployment tasks.
Renault emphasizes that using civilian platforms accelerates the adoption of new technologies and reduces costs compared to developing entirely new military vehicles. This approach is already seen in other segments: for example, the passion for unique cars is also shared by famous athletes—as in the case of the Lamborghini Aventador in Ilia Topuria’s collection.
The company notes that the 4 TROOP can be adapted for various tasks and types of terrain, and can also be integrated into Renault’s existing service network for maintenance and repairs. This not only improves the army’s operational capability but also reduces the logistical burden on military units.
The appearance of the 4 TROOP could mark the beginning of a new trend, where civilian technologies are rapidly introduced into the defense sector. If the project develops further, similar solutions may appear in other European countries, where the cost and speed of military equipment deployment are becoming increasingly important.
