Geely’s Starray EM-i made its official Spanish debut in March as the largest and most powerful plug-in hybrid SUV in its price bracket. It delivers 262 CV and up to 136 km of electric range, attracting attention in a market shaped by developing regulations. Independent European automotive reviews have highlighted its size, performance and aggressive pricing.
With a starting price of 28,240 euros with financing, the Starray EM-i undercuts established competitors while offering features typically found in much pricier models. Measuring 4.74 meters long and 1.91 meters wide, it sits between the C and D-SUV segments, matching the footprint of a Toyota RAV4 at the price of a smaller Toyota C-HR. The cabin has five full-size seats, a flat rear floor and a 528-litre boot that expands to 2,065 litres, making it practical for families and long trips. Several Spanish automotive outlets say Geely’s rapid dealer network expansion has further boosted interest in the model.
The Starray EM-i’s performance stands out, too. Its EM-i system combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (100 CV) with a 218 CV electric motor, delivering a total of 262 CV to the front wheels. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in eight seconds and has a top speed of 170 km/h. The PRO version’s 18.4 kWh LFP battery provides 83 km of electric range in mixed driving, while the Pro+ variant extends that to 136 km. The model is available in Europe with 18.4 kWh and 29.8 kWh battery options, and offers a maximum electric range of 136 km (WLTP). Fast charging at 30 kW, or 60 kW for the Pro+, allows a 30% to 80% charge in 20 minutes. Independent technical reviews confirm these figures, placing the Starray EM-i among the most capable plug-in hybrids in its class.
Standard equipment includes a 15.4-inch central touchscreen with 2.5K resolution, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 360º camera, 4G connectivity, over-the-air updates, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and V2L/V2V functions for powering devices or another vehicle. Comfort features include a heat pump, a heated steering wheel and front seats, electric seat adjustment for the driver and passenger, keyless entry and start, LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels. Independent European sources say the Starray EM-i supports 6.6 kW AC and 30 kW DC charging. It has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Euro NCAP and multiple European automotive sources report high scores for adult and child occupant protection, strengthening its appeal to families.
Warranty terms vary by market and source. The model’s standard European warranty is reported as six years or 100,000 miles for the vehicle and eight years or 125,000 miles for the battery. Spanish publications also cite an eight-year or 200,000-kilometre warranty for both the car and its battery, subject to local Geely Spain terms.
Sales data reflects the model’s impact. In July, the Starray EM-i registered 907 units, making it Spain’s second best-selling plug-in hybrid. August added another 574 units, bringing the 2026 total to 1,798. The figures point to shifting buyer priorities, with value and electric range increasingly decisive factors.
Geely’s arrival is part of a broader wave of Chinese brands gaining ground in Spain, alongside Omoda, Jaecoo, BYD and MG. The Starray EM-i’s combination of size, power and technology at a disruptive price puts pressure on established players. As reported earlier, Chinese hybrid SUVs are expanding across Europe, and the Starray EM-i’s early sales suggest Spanish buyers are ready to embrace the shift.
The Starray EM-i’s figures also point to changing expectations in Spain’s SUV market. Established brands can no longer rely on badge prestige and incremental updates alone: Geely’s entry, backed by strong sales and a feature list rivaling premium models, puts value, technology and real-world usability at the center of competition.
