The Government says it trusts the popular jury that will hear the case against Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. She faces trial over alleged influence peddling and embezzlement. Ministers say the focus should remain on her presumption of innocence amid the intense public attention surrounding the proceedings.
Government spokeswoman Elma Saiz said the jury must be impartial and deliver justice. She was explicit: in this case, justice would mean declaring Gómez innocent. Saiz also expressed her full support for and solidarity with the defendant, who she said had faced public humiliation simply because she is the wife of a progressive president.
