A new survey of 19,000 US drivers reveals heated seats are now the most sought-after extra in new cars, surpassing all-wheel drive and advanced safety systems. The shift highlights changing priorities among buyers.

Nearly half of American drivers planning to buy a new car in the next three years say heated seats are their top priority, according to a sweeping survey by AutoPacific. Out of 19,000 respondents, 47% placed this comfort feature above all others, signaling a notable shift in what buyers value most when choosing their next vehicle.

The findings mark a departure from previous years, when performance or all-wheel drive typically dominated wish lists. Now, comfort and convenience are taking center stage. Heated seats, once considered a luxury, have climbed rapidly in popularity—so much so that they did not even appear in AutoPacific’s top 15 features just a year ago. The change may reflect both evolving consumer expectations and the relatively low cost of adding heated seats, which often increases a car’s price by less than €200.

Other features rounding out the top five include front and rear parking sensors (45%), automatic emergency braking when reversing (44%), power-adjustable driver’s seats (43%), and lane-keeping assistance (43%). Surprisingly, all-wheel drive, long seen as a must-have for many buyers, now trails behind newer comfort and safety technologies. Even features like large animal detection, dashboard cameras, wireless charging pads, and power-adjustable passenger seats have edged ahead in the rankings.

AutoPacific’s data also shows that priorities shift depending on the type of vehicle buyers are considering. Those interested in electric or plug-in hybrid models tend to focus on battery range and fast-charging capabilities, reflecting the unique concerns of the EV market. This trend mirrors broader changes in the automotive industry, where technology and user experience are increasingly central to purchasing decisions.

While none of these extras are strictly necessary for safe driving, their growing popularity suggests that buyers now see comfort and convenience as essential, not optional. The survey’s results echo a wider movement in the car market, where even mainstream brands are racing to offer premium features once reserved for luxury models.

For context, the automotive sector has seen other major shifts in recent months. For example, the ongoing debate over the future of iconic brands and their ownership structures continues to make headlines, as seen in the recent clash between Volkswagen and Italian investors over Ducati. These developments highlight how consumer preferences and industry strategies are evolving in parallel.

As manufacturers respond to these changing demands, buyers can expect even more focus on comfort, safety, and technology in the next generation of vehicles. For now, heated seats have become the unexpected symbol of what today’s drivers want most from their cars.
