Toyota Unveils TR LH2: New Hydrogen Prototype for Le Mans. Toyota has presented the TR LH2 prototype powered by a liquid hydrogen engine. The car will make its track debut at Le Mans next week. The company aims to prove that hydrogen technology is ready for major racing events.
TR LH2 is the name of Toyota's new prototype, which the company unveiled for the first time at the Le Mans track. The car is built on the TR010 HYBRID chassis and equipped with an internal combustion engine running on liquid hydrogen. The first test drives are scheduled for June 11 and 13, when the car will take to the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe as part of the 94th 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
For Toyota, this project is more than just an experiment. The company is consistently developing hydrogen technologies in motorsport, collaborating with Rookie Racing, and advancing solutions that have already been tested in other prototypes. Since 2021, the ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2 Concept has been participating in races, and since 2023, liquid hydrogen versions have joined as well.
TR LH2 is the first step toward full-fledged participation of hydrogen-powered cars in the world's leading endurance races. According to the plan, the TR010 HYBRID chassis will be ready for competition on June 13–14, 2026, but Toyota already intends to demonstrate that the technology works in real track conditions.
In recent years, the company has actively showcased the capabilities of hydrogen engines: in 2022, the GR Yaris H2 completed a demonstration stage at the Ypres Rally, and in 2025 and 2026, the GR Yaris Rally 2 H2 Concept took part in the Finland and Monte Carlo rallies. At the same time, the GR H2 Racing concept is being developed, which could become the basis for a separate class of hydrogen cars at Le Mans.
TR LH2 will also be presented at the special event Hydrogen Village, which opens on June 10. Toyota emphasizes: this is not a display exhibit but a real contender for competing against traditional gasoline and hybrid cars. The company hopes that the success of TR LH2 will accelerate recognition of hydrogen as a promising fuel for motorsport and mass transportation.
According to Auto Bild, interest in hydrogen technology in motorsport is growing not only at Toyota: other manufacturers are also considering participating in new categories. If the TR LH2 project proves successful, Le Mans could become the stage for a genuine technological revolution.
