Madrid police have arrested two men in connection with a string of violent robberies targeting small businesses in the city in August. The suspects, both Spanish nationals in their forties and known in the San Blas district, were apprehended on August 19 after weeks of surveillance and investigation. Authorities say the pair, each with prior convictions for similar crimes, carried out five armed robberies, using pistols and occasionally an axe or a pick to intimidate shopkeepers and demand cash.
The robberies primarily affected food stores owned by Chinese nationals, but also included a gas station in Coslada. One attack took place during the solar eclipse on August 12, when the streets were quieter as many residents watched the rare astronomical event. The suspects exploited the distraction, entering the gas station around 19:30, threatening the employee with a firearm and fleeing with the contents of the cash register.
Police say the men changed their appearance during the crimes, sometimes covering their faces with masks or sunglasses, but at other times leaving them uncovered. In one case, a shop owner described a mask resembling Freddy Krueger, leading investigators to dub the operation 'Freddy.' The first robbery occurred on August 3 in Getafe, where two armed men forced a worker to hand over the day’s takings. On August 10, a similar incident unfolded as a shop was closing in Puente de Vallecas. Another robbery took place in Moratalaz that same day, where the assailants used a pistol and an axe, damaged the premises and escaped with cash.
Surveillance footage proved impressive in identifying the suspects, especially when they acted without masks. Investigators noted that the men covered their arm tattoos with tape to avoid recognition. Witness statements and additional video evidence helped police trace a dark Ford Fiesta used in the getaways; it had false license plates. During the final robbery, on August 17 in Retiro, the suspects used a pistol and a pick. One of them smashed the victim’s mobile phone, causing it to explode, before they fled.
After gathering sufficient evidence, police located and arrested the two men in Puente de Vallecas. Officers recovered one of the firearms used in the robberies from their vehicle. The total amount stolen across all the incidents did not exceed €3,000. Both suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention and face five counts of robbery with violence and intimidation.
The case highlights the challenges faced by small business owners in Madrid, particularly those operating late or in less crowded areas.
