Spain’s royal family will lead Madrid’s National Day ceremony on Monday 12 October. Aircraft, military vehicles and thousands of participants will move through the capital as road closures begin at 07:00.
At 11:00 on Monday 12 October, Spain’s National Day ceremony will begin in central Madrid. Felipe VI and Letizia will preside, with Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía also expected to attend. A total of 4,380 participants from the armed forces and security services will take part. Other public institutions will join them. The main spectacle will combine aircraft with a land display through the capital.
Aircraft will pass over Madrid while troops and military vehicles move along the route. According to figures reported by La Voz de Galicia, the programme includes 34 combat and training aircraft. It also lists 16 transport aircraft and 32 helicopters. The ground column will feature 144 cars and 39 motorcycles. It will also include 286 horses and five service dogs.
Those figures are larger than the earlier estimate of around 50 planes. The previous count also put the helicopter total at 30 and military vehicles at more than 100.
The 2026 parade will mark the first appearance in Madrid of Spain’s new 8×8 Dragón wheeled armoured vehicles, linking the national ceremony to the modernisation of the land forces.
The parade will run along the Paseo del Prado and Paseo de Recoletos, between the glorieta del Emperador Carlos V and plaza de Colón. The royal reviewing stand will be at plaza de Neptuno, with the columns advancing along the central route.
Military honours for the King and Queen will open the ceremony. The flag will be raised, followed by a tribute to those who died. Most reports, including coverage from Telemadrid and El Confidencial, give the start time as 11:00. One publication has listed 12:00.
Paratroopers assigned to carry the Spanish flag will provide one of the most recognisable moments. The Formación Mirlo is also scheduled to fly over Madrid again.
The official column will include the Royal Guard and the Army. The Navy will take part, as will the Air and Space Forces. The Military Emergency Unit, Civil Guard, National Police, Protección Civil and Salvamento Marítimo are also scheduled to participate.
Around 80,000 people are expected to attend. Madrid City Council has prepared a special security and mobility operation for the route and nearby areas. The parade forms part of a wider programme of official and cultural activities linked to Día de la Hispanidad.
More than 560 municipal police officers and 250 SAMUR–Protección Civil personnel will be mobilised during the celebrations. More than 200 police officers will work directly on the parade, supported by up to 120 medical staff and around 20 emergency vehicles; about 50 mobility agents will also be deployed.
Major road closures around the Paseo del Prado and Paseo de Recoletos are planned from approximately 07:00 to 15:00. The restrictions will also affect Cibeles, Colón and plaza de Carlos V.
Madrid has announced changes to bus routes and restrictions on the city’s public bicycle-rental system. The disruption will therefore begin several hours before the central ceremony.
The event comes at a politically sensitive point in the calendar. General elections are due on 29 November, just weeks after the national celebration. The attendance of political representatives, along with their presence or absence at official events, will draw particular attention.
Asturias president Adrián Barbón has confirmed that he will attend the parade. He will also attend the reception hosted afterward by the royal family. Party leaders’ reactions during the official events will form part of the day’s political reading.
Senior officials are expected to arrive before the royal family. They include Chief of the Defence Staff Teodoro Esteban López Calderón and Defence Minister Margarita Robles. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is also expected. Their presence gives the ceremony a broader institutional character than a strictly military display.
An earlier parade briefing had already outlined the scale of the programme. The confirmed plan brings the royal ceremony and air formations into the same central-Madrid security operation.
The route will carry a formal state ceremony through one of the capital’s busiest public spaces. The confirmed road closure window runs from approximately 07:00 to 15:00.
