Autumn is on the calendar, but summer still has a grip on Spain. Temperatures may reach nearly 40 degrees in some areas, while Galicia and the Cantabrian coast turn noticeably cooler.
Madrid is set to reach 35 degrees again, even though autumn has officially begun. Temperatures may approach 40 degrees in parts of Spain. Six regions have yellow heat alerts during the central hours of the day.
The sharpest change will come along the Atlantic north, where temperatures will drop substantially. According to RTVE, an anticyclone will keep conditions stable. The south and inland areas will stay much warmer than the north-west and the Cantabrian coast.
AEMET has issued warnings for Andalucía, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalunya, Extremadura and the Canary Islands. Maximum temperatures may reach or pass 35 degrees in several of those areas.
EFE reported up to 38 degrees in parts of Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén and Sevilla. The Huelva coast may reach 36 degrees. Other reports put Badajoz at as much as 39 degrees. Some mid-altitude areas of the Canary Islands are also expected to see similarly high temperatures.
AEMET’s broader outlook put the probability of a warmer-than-normal autumn in September–November 2026 at 60–70%, compared with 10% for a colder season.
The heat is not spreading evenly across the country.
Temperatures will rise in the Ebro valley, the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean arc. The strongest increase will be in the south-east. Aragón’s Ebro valley could reach around 36 degrees. Parts of Tarragona in Catalunya may also reach 36.
Galicia and the Cantabrian region will be noticeably cooler inland. A Coruña is expected to reach only 21 degrees, while Bilbao will reach 26.
The late-September heat is part of a broader episode rather than an isolated warm day. Spanish media reported temperatures above 35 degrees in several southern and inland areas between 21 and 24 September, with AEMET warnings remaining in force in multiple autonomous communities.
Night temperatures will rise across much of Spain too. Galicia will be the main exception, with minimum temperatures falling further. Lugo could drop to 11 degrees.
The weather pattern will keep the day stable. An anticyclone over the Peninsula will bring mostly clear skies and almost no rain. Morning mist and later low cloud are expected in Galicia, the Cantabrian region and parts of the Mediterranean coast.
Winds will differ by region. They will blow moderately across the northern Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands, the Cantabrian coast and Galicia. Moderate easterly winds are also expected in Alborán and the Strait. Elsewhere, winds will stay light.
Spain is not seeing a uniform end to summer. Heat will remain across the south, the eastern interior and Mediterranean areas. The Atlantic north is moving toward cooler weather.
That split is the main fact of the forecast. The calendar has changed, but heat remains a concern in several regions. The yellow alerts show where temperatures are expected to matter most. AEMET's warnings and forecasts reported by EFE and RTVE point to late-season warmth across much of Spain, but not at the same level everywhere.
