About 300 people spent the first night in Madrid's Puerta del Sol, according to the Sindicato de Inquilinas e Inquilinos de Madrid. They slept in an open-air camp and called for stronger renter protection under the proposed Decreto Mari Carmen.
The tenants also want indefinite contracts and a halt to evictions. Their protest puts pressure on the Government before Tuesday's Cabinet meeting.
The camp followed Saturday's march under the slogan "Ni una Mari Carmen más". The Delegación del Gobierno estimated the crowd at about 25,000 people. Organisers said 300,000 attended.
The march ended, but the protest did not. The union urged supporters to occupy the capital's kilometre zero and keep pressure on the Government.
AFP and Euronews reported that roughly 100 to 150 tents were installed in Puerta del Sol during the camp's first night. Protesters said they intended to remain at least until Tuesday, when the Government is expected to address the housing package.
