Prime Video’s high-profile adaptation of ‘God of War’ has been forced into a major change after Ryan Hurst, originally cast as Kratos, sustained a severe injury during filming in Vancouver. The incident, which occurred in late June, led to an immediate halt in production and a decision by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios to recast the lead role. According to Deadline, Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt, requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery period that could extend up to a year.
The injury came after Hurst had undergone significant physical preparation for the demanding role, including gaining 40 pounds of muscle. Despite months of work on set, the timeline for his recovery was incompatible with the show’s production schedule. As a result, the studios opted to move forward with a new actor in the role of Kratos, with preparations for reshoots set to begin in mid-August and filming expected to restart by mid-October.
At the time of the incident, four episodes had already been completed. However, these will now be reshot with the new lead, as the presence of a child actor, Callum Vinson, playing Atreus, makes it difficult to use existing footage due to the rapid changes in appearance that can occur at a young age. The series, created by Ronald D. Moore, had been planned as a two-season project with both seasons filmed consecutively, a plan that remains unchanged despite the setback.
The cast features Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus on a journey to fulfill a family promise, exploring themes of legacy and identity. Hurst’s departure comes just as he appears in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’, which is set for release this week.
