On 6 November, Guardia Civil rescuers from the La Rioja Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) found Aya in a hard-to-reach section of the Colorado ravine in Daroca de Rioja, near Moncalvillo. Reaching her required a fixed-rope descent of nearly 30 metres. The team had searched the ravine for several hours over steep ground and through thick vegetation.
The search resumed early in the morning after darkness and difficult terrain forced rescuers to suspend it the previous evening. Faint beeps from Aya’s electronic collar helped the GREIM team narrow down her position and locate her.
She was disoriented and soaked, and the cold left her shaking. Exhaustion showed, and she was limping on one front leg.
Rescuers protected her and placed her in a transport bag designed for canyoning before carrying her out safely. A hunting companion of her owner then took her to a veterinarian for an assessment.
Aya had gone missing the previous day, when her 64-year-old owner, a hunter from Bizkaia, fell in the ravine while trying to recover her. He suffered a head injury and was extracted by stretcher and winch before being transferred by the Galeno medical helicopter to Hospital San Pedro in Logroño. He was reported to be in intensive care the following day. GREIM led the response, with the Guardia Civil helicopter and two forestry agents from the La Rioja Government involved. Servicio Riojano de Salud also took part.
