Three cereal wagons broke free from another freight convoy on a private Cargil branch and struck a locomotive cab in Martorell on Tuesday afternoon. The Renfe driver was unhurt and went to hospital for a precautionary examination.

Three cereal wagons broke away from a separate freight convoy on a private Cargill branch and moved towards Spain’s general-interest rail network (REFIG). They struck a Renfe Mercancías freight locomotive in Martorell on Tuesday afternoon, 3 November, and derailed. The private siding connects Cargill’s industrial facilities with the wider railway network.

Ser Catalunya first reported the collision, which Renfe confirmed. El País identified the locomotive as a Series 253 unit. It was manoeuvring when the wagons reached it. The operator said the driver was uninjured. As a precaution and in line with protocol, he went to hospital for a medical examination.

No other injuries were reported, and the incident did not affect Rodalies services or railway traffic, according to Renfe and Adif. Adif said the cause of the derailment remained under investigation. The Martorell collision was separate from the Urda crash covered in earlier rail coverage.
