This autumn, Villaverde and Getafe will see some of Madrid’s biggest traffic changes in years. Shakira’s concert series at Iberdrola Music is expected to draw about 57,000 people each night, prompting authorities to close major roads and reroute daily commutes across the area.
Locals in Villaverde and Getafe are preparing for heavy congestion. The M-45, a main route through southern Madrid, will have partial and full closures at several junctions, especially during concert hours. Streets including Laguna Dalga, Laguna de Cameros, San Eustaquio, Laguna del Marquesado, Resina, avenida Real de Pinto, and Valle de Tobalina are all listed for possible shutdowns. The roundabout under the M-45, which links Villaverde Alto and Getafe, will also have restricted access, with some routes blocked for drivers coming from Getafe or trying to change direction from the M-45 Oeste.
The official mobility plan for Shakira's concerts includes a dedicated taxi and drop-off zone to ease congestion around the venue.
Madrid’s city council and the regional government have set up a special plan to handle the crowds. Metro lines 3 and 12 will run extra trains between midnight and 1:30 a.m., focusing on Villaverde Alto and Los Espartales stations near the venue. Free electric shuttle buses will run from Gran Vía de Villaverde to Atocha, stopping at Legazpi, every 7.5 to 15 minutes between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Passengers can only board at Gran Vía de Villaverde; Legazpi and Atocha are drop-off points.
The impact goes beyond concertgoers. Villaverde’s 167,952 residents and Getafe’s 193,238 inhabitants will have to adjust to new routes and possible delays, especially in Getafe Norte and Perales del Río. For the 10,000 people in Perales del Río, the situation is even tougher: with the main road to Getafe closed for construction, their only route is the M-45, which will also be affected by concert closures. Some locals say getting around during concert nights will be nearly impossible.
Authorities are urging concert attendees to use public transport and avoid driving in the affected areas. In addition to the metro and shuttle buses, Cercanías stations Villaverde Alto (C4a, C4b, C5) and San Cristóbal Industrial (C3) will be open, along with EMT bus lines 22, 79, T41, N14, and several interurban routes. Some bus lines may be diverted due to road closures, and for longer trips, officials recommend using the M-30 and M-40 ring roads.
According to several Spanish media outlets, the series of 12 concerts is scheduled for September and October 2026, with an additional date added on October 9. This extended schedule means that traffic restrictions and public transport reinforcements will be in place for nearly a month, affecting daily routines for both residents and commuters.
The Iberdrola Music venue covers 30 hectares and includes a stadium, library, fashion workshop, food court, and children’s area. Gates open at noon, with access to the main arena from 8 p.m. Concerts run from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., and fans are expected to leave gradually until 1 a.m. Municipal police will adjust road closures in real time to keep things safe and moving.
Madrid’s plan is similar to recent large-scale transport efforts, like the Barcelona express bus expansion during major events, showing a growing reliance on public transit and temporary restrictions to manage crowds.
Whether the plan works will depend on how well authorities can balance the needs of fans and residents. For now, people in Villaverde and Getafe are facing a month of detours and hoping their daily routines aren’t completely upended by the concerts.
