A six-year-old boy reportedly drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Calella, in the Maresme region, on Sunday, 19 July. The reported death brings the summer tally of fatal pool drownings in Catalonia to seven.
The emergency call came in at 17:55. Four ambulances and a psychological-support team reportedly attended. Four Mossos d’Esquadra patrol units and local police officers also responded. The child could not be revived.
The reported seasonal figures also include more than 20 people injured in pool-related drowning incidents across Catalonia since 15 June. The reported total of seven fatal pool drownings compares with four in the same period last year.
Basic precautions around swimming areas include keeping children under constant adult supervision and following posted safety rules. If someone is in distress, alert a lifeguard or call 112. Running or jumping in restricted areas can increase risk; toys should be removed from the pool when not in use.
