Spain is now the clear favourite on paper. Putintseva and doubles specialist Anna Danilina are the only members of the Kazakh team still in the squad after Spain beat Kazakhstan 3-0 in the 2022 round robin.
That meeting gives Spain useful evidence, but no guarantee. Putintseva lost her singles match to Nuria Párrizas. She also lost in doubles to Paula Badosa and Aliona Bolsova. Her record against players in Spain's current group still demands attention. She leads Cristina Bucsa 1-0 and Sara Sorribes 3-1.
Those figures matter because Bucsa and Sorribes are expected to form Spain's doubles pairing. A deciding point could put the Kazakh veteran against players she has already beaten.
The confirmed Kazakhstan group without Rybakina consists of Putintseva, Danilina, Zhibek Kulambayeva and Sonya Zhiyenbayeva. Spain’s five-player selection is Cristina Bucsa, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Kaitlin Quevedo, Marina Bassols Ribera and Sara Sorribes Tormo, according to the WTA.
Suárez has picked a largely new group compared with the 2022 tie. Jessica Bouzas, Kaitlin Quevedo, Marina Bassols and Sorribes form a new quartet for this matchup. Bucsa became the fifth player selected from the list announced on 31 July.
Spain's record adds pressure. The national team has reached the Final 8 in six straight editions. It has not gone beyond the quarter-finals in any of those appearances. Spain's last title came in 1998 under the previous format.
The Billie Jean King Cup Finals run from 22 to 27 September 2026 in Shenzhen. The next opponent would be tougher. If Spain advances, Saturday's semifinal will be against the winner of Great Britain and Czechia. The WTA confirmed Rybakina's withdrawal and the lineups for the tie. Qazinform also reported that she needed time to recover after a demanding stretch and an Achilles problem. The official Billie Jean King Cup preview has pointed to Spain's quarter-final barrier as well. Despite six straight Final 8 appearances, the team has not advanced beyond that stage during the run.
