A man with a record of similar offenses has been arrested in Lozoyuela, Madrid, as the basic suspect in a wildfire that devastated 700 hectares in the region. Local residents reported seeing an unfamiliar figure near the fire’s origin and alerted authorities. The suspect, a 52-year-old Spanish national, was found by the Guardia Civil in the town square, partly concealed behind a building, after neighbors identified him by his appearance and behavior.

Lozoyuela Mayor Lucía Balseiro of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) said the man was neither a resident nor an employee in the area. Investigators from Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s environmental protection service, concluded from their initial inspection that the fire was likely started deliberately. The blaze began around 4 p.m. in a rural area between Mangirón, Cinco Villas and Buitrago del Lozoya. Officers found a lighter among the suspect’s belongings, and it has been included in the investigation.
Authorities are collecting further evidence. This includes forensic analysis of the suspect’s hands and clothing, along with a review of nearby surveillance footage. They are also taking his formal statement. As of midday Friday, he remained in custody at the Guardia Civil station in Tres Cantos, Madrid, and was expected to appear before a judge by Sunday afternoon. The Community of Madrid has announced its intention to join the proceedings as a popular prosecution.
Government delegate Francisco Martín said the investigation did not point to an economic motive, but instead suggested a personal issue.
