Police Find €286,000 in Cash at Alicante Businessman's Home. Police have discovered €286,070 in cash at the home of a businessman in Alicante. The money was hidden in various places around the apartment. Among the items found were bags with inscriptions in Chinese.

In Alicante, police seized a large sum of cash—€286,070—from businessman Julio Martínez Martínez. According to the investigation materials, the money was discovered during a search conducted on December 11, 2025. As reported by El País, the banknotes were hidden in different parts of the apartment: in the living room, bathroom, and hallway.

Specifically, in the living room, police officers found €4,550 in a checkered fabric travel bag. In the bathroom, a sports backpack contained €25,000 in a plastic bag and another €49,900 in a paper bag. €540 was found on the kitchen surface, and another €550 in a wardrobe in the hallway. All amounts were seized and documented in the official report.

Of particular note were five envelopes with hieroglyphs, on which “ten thousand” euros was written in Chinese. These details, according to the investigation, may indicate possible connections with foreign partners or schemes. However, no official comments have been made on this matter so far.

The situation surrounding Julio Martínez Martínez attracted attention not only due to the sum involved but also because of his connections with prominent politicians. As El País notes, the businessman had previously appeared in reports about business dealings with Venezuelan partners involved in gold exports and oil trade. Questions about the origin of the funds remain, and the investigation is ongoing.

The context for such news also includes attention to financial transactions in Spain, especially against the backdrop of tighter controls on cash and efforts to combat money laundering. In recent years, authorities have increased scrutiny of large amounts found outside the banking system, which is reflected in police practices across the regions.

In this regard, it is worth recalling that a city awards ceremony was recently held in Madrid, where issues of transparency and trust in public figures were discussed. More about the event and its participants — in our coverage on new highlights and expectations at the ceremony in Madrid.

For reference: under Spanish law, holding large sums of cash is not prohibited; however, without verified sources of origin, such funds may become the subject of a separate investigation. In recent years, Spain has tightened cash transaction limits and strengthened controls over financial flows to reduce the risks of illegal operations and increase economic transparency.
