Nearly 100,000 people are expected at Zaragoza’s flower offering for the Virgen del Pilar. Venezuela is this year’s guest country at one of the main events of the city’s patronal celebrations.

At 06:30, organised groups are due to begin filing along the route for Zaragoza’s flower offering. The procession is expected to run for about 16 hours, with the final participants reaching the basilica between 22:30 and 23:30, according to the schedule reported by Heraldo de Aragón. Groups were assigned routes from Plaza de Aragón and Plaza de Santa Engracia. Individual participants could join the route to Plaza del Pilar from 06:45 until 20:00.

Nearly 100,000 people are expected to take part, including participants from 994 organised groups. Venezuela is this year’s guest country. The offering falls on the main day of Fiestas del Pilar, between the city’s pregón on 10 October and the Ofrenda de Frutos on 13 October. Zaragoza’s religious ceremony gives 12 October a local focus alongside the national celebration in Madrid.

The statue is just 36.5 centimetres tall.

Devotees place flowers on a tall, pyramid-shaped structure bearing the image of Aragón’s patron saint. In 2026, red carnations were chosen for the Virgin’s mantle and the Cross of Lorraine, replacing the white flowers that predominated the previous year.

The structure supporting the Virgen del Pilar can hold up to seven million flowers. More than 18,200 people attended the statue’s installation on the eve of the offering.

The late-Gothic statue dates to around 1435 and is attributed to Juan de la Huerta, a sculptor from Daroca. The Virgin is shown crowned, wearing a tunic and mantle. She gathers the mantle’s folds with her right hand. The infant Jesus is naked, holding the mantle with one hand and a bird with the other.

A group of women led by María Cristina de Habsburgo-Lorena funded the crown, which was made at Madrid’s Ansorena jewellery workshops. Pope Pío X blessed it before the statue was crowned on 20 May 1905. The Virgen del Pilar has also been patron of the Guardia Civil for more than a century. The title was approved by Real Orden on 8 February 1913.

Family associations take part, as do professional bodies. Sporting and regional associations join them, alongside individual donors.

The floral offering began in 1958, after city councillor Manuel Rodeles took inspiration from Valencia’s tribute to the Virgen de los Desamparados. The programme for 12 October also included a river offering, scheduled to leave the Expo pier at 09:35.

The programme for 12 October also included the 14th traditional Aragonese costume contest and the 11th contest for flowers, baskets and floral arrangements. Work on a separate floral carpet was scheduled to begin at 07:30; after mass, around noon, the papal procession was due to walk across it.
