Ferland Mendy sidelined for five months after injury against Espanyol. Ferland Mendy will undergo surgery on a thigh muscle following an injury in the game against Espanyol. Recovery is expected to take around five months. He could be out of the Real Madrid squad until October.

Ferland Mendy, defender for Real Madrid, will undergo surgery next Monday due to an injury to the tendon of the rectus femoris muscle in his right leg. The injury occurred at the very beginning of the Espanyol–Real Madrid match, which took place on May 3 in Barcelona. According to the club, the procedure will be performed in France, although surgery in Finland had also been considered earlier, where Militao was successfully operated on.

Doctors estimate Mendy's recovery period to be about five months. This means the player will not be able to return to the field before October, assuming there are no complications. Real Madrid emphasizes that such injuries always carry the risk of unforeseen delays, especially considering Mendy's history of regular muscle problems.

Details of the operation and clinic selection

Initially, surgery with the Finnish surgeon Lempainen was considered, as he had previously worked successfully with club players. However, the final decision was made in favor of French specialists. The club notes that the choice of clinic was based on medical recommendations and logistics.

Contract and future at the club

Mendy’s contract with Real Madrid runs until June 30, 2028. According to the club’s internal policies, players who suffer serious injuries retain their job guarantees. This all but assures the Frenchman of a place in the squad for the 2026–2027 season, despite a lengthy absence from the pitch. Club management highlight that Mendy has repeatedly put his health on the line for the team, and this will be taken into account in future planning.

Impact on the squad and season

A prolonged absence of the main left-back could affect rotation and tactical decisions for Real Madrid’s coaching staff at the start of next season. The club does not rule out the need for temporary reinforcements in defense. Similar staffing issues have previously been raised in other high-profile cases, as was the case, for example, during the investigation into surveillance of the former treasurer of the Partido Popular — details of this process were revealed earlier.

Mendy’s injury history remains one of the most discussed topics among fans and experts. The club hopes that after recovery, the player will be able to return to his previous level, despite the complex medical background of recent years.
