Valencian health managers say hiring more staff will not solve the crisis on its own. They want greater autonomy, clearer career paths and stronger leadership to keep professionals in public hospitals.
Valencian hospitals are finding it harder to keep the professionals they need. Younger staff want flatter structures and more ways to develop their careers. That warning came during the third panel at the event 'La sanidad valenciana: talento, prevención y personalización', organised by Fundamed, the Premios Best in Class (BiC) and Gaceta Médica. The main question was not only how to hire people. It was how to keep them.
Raúl Ferrando gave a measure of the management problem. Over three years, he said, he had needed to find three subdirectors and two medical directors. He contacted between 100 and 120 people. One medical subdirectorate was still vacant. Around 70% to 80% of the people approached had turned down management roles because of the salary.
