When the temperature rises, a sluggish car air conditioner can quickly make any journey uncomfortable—and even unsafe. As summer approaches, drivers are urged to check their vehicle’s AC system to avoid fatigue, maintain focus, and reduce the risk of breakdowns or accidents. According to Spain’s DGT, driving in high heat can cut attention and increase accident risk by up to 20%, making a well-functioning air conditioner more than just a luxury.

Cabin Filter: The First Line of Defense

The cabin filter is often the culprit when cool air weakens or airflow becomes irregular. Its job is to trap dust, pollen, and pollutants before they enter the car’s interior. Over time, the filter clogs, forcing the AC to work harder and sometimes causing unpleasant odors. A saturated filter can also reduce the system’s efficiency just when you need it most.

Most manufacturers recommend replacing the cabin filter every 12,000 to 20,000 kilometers, or at least once a year, depending on driving conditions. The process is straightforward and inexpensive, but skipping it can lead to bigger problems during long summer trips.

Refrigerant: When and Why to Recharge

If your air conditioner struggles to cool or takes too long to lower the cabin temperature, low refrigerant may be to blame. This can result from gradual loss, a leak in the system, or issues with components like the compressor or evaporator. Sometimes, a dirty filter or damaged ductwork is also at fault.

Typically, AC systems need a refrigerant recharge every two years. However, if you find yourself topping up frequently, it’s likely there’s a leak that needs professional attention. European regulations restrict the use of older, high-impact refrigerants, so it’s essential to use the correct type—R134a for older vehicles, R1234yf for newer models—and never mix them.

Recharging should always be done at a qualified workshop. The process involves evacuating the old gas, checking for leaks, possibly adding a contrast agent, and refilling with the precise amount of refrigerant. Attempting this at home without proper equipment can damage the system or cause injury.

Cleaning and Maintenance: Avoiding Bad Habits

Persistent odors when switching on the AC often signal a buildup of moisture, bacteria, or mold in the ventilation system. This is especially common in the ducts, vents, and around the filter. Specialized sprays or foams can help, but if smells linger, a professional cleaning is recommended.

To keep the system in good shape, run the air conditioner for a few minutes even outside the summer months. This keeps internal components lubricated and reduces the risk of breakdowns. Before setting off, open the doors or windows briefly to let out trapped hot air, then start the AC and adjust the temperature gradually. Running the system at maximum for long periods doesn’t cool faster and can strain the components.

If the air isn’t cold, airflow is weak, or the system stops working entirely, check the fuses, fans, compressor, and condenser. Early detection of these issues can prevent more expensive repairs and help ensure a safer, more comfortable drive.
