A 54-year-old construction worker died on Friday after being struck while working on the extensive renovation of Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona. The afternoon incident is the first fatal workplace accident reported since the stadium’s major overhaul began in June 2023. The Mossos d’Esquadra said officers from the Les Corts police station received an emergency call at about 15:30.
The Camp Nou renovation, which began on June 1, 2023, has involved thousands of workers. Crews recently completed the stadium’s new third tier and are building a perimeter compression ring designed to carry structural forces from the future roof. The planned roof will cover more than 47,000 square metres, over a stadium intended to accommodate about 105,000 spectators. Completing the ring marks a structural key stage, not the installation of the roof: cable tensioning and membrane placement remain, along with further systems work. The worker’s identity has not been disclosed. He was reportedly fatally injured by a blow while carrying out his duties on site.
After receiving the alert, multiple Mossos d’Esquadra units, including the Investigation Unit, and teams from the Emergency Medical System (SEM) were dispatched to the scene. Despite their rapid response, medical personnel could not save the worker. The Mossos d’Esquadra notified the duty investigating court and the Department of Business and Labour. The inquiry will establish how the injury occurred and examine the work underway, the applicable risk controls and the responsibilities of those involved.
The fatality comes amid wider concern about workplace safety in Spain, particularly in construction. Figures attributed to Catalonia’s Observatori del Treball i Model Productiu show 93 workplace-accident deaths between January and September 2026, compared with 75 in the same period of 2025. Of the 2026 total, 67 people died while working, against 62 a year earlier. The region also recorded 555 serious accidents, down 3.8% from 577, while construction accounted for 9,227 occupational accidents resulting in leave, or 12.7% of the reported total, information from figures reported by El Nacional.
National figures cited by El País put Spain’s fatal occupational-accident rate at 1.89 deaths per 100,000 employed people in 2024, up from 1.71 in 2023. The reported rate for construction was 7.47 per 100,000 workers, compared with 4.84 across the European Union. The same report said 120 construction workers died during working hours in Spain from January through August 2026. Construction workers represented about one-third of workplace deaths, while accounting for roughly 7% of people affiliated with Social Security.
The Camp Nou redevelopment is one of Barcelona’s most impressive infrastructure projects in recent years. Work on the upper stands and roof structure involves heavy components and cables, with crews also working at height. The specific operation underway at the time of the accident will be basic to determining what happened.
