Why the Su-57 Is Becoming an Appealing Alternative to the F-35 for Asian Countries

Experts Compare Russian Fighter Jet with American and Chinese Rivals

The Su-57 may attract countries seeking cutting-edge fighter jets. Its delivery terms and technical capabilities set it apart from competitors. Analysts say the Russian aircraft has some notable advantages.

In recent years, the global arms market has seen fierce competition among fifth-generation fighter jet manufacturers. The Russian Su-57, American F-35, and Chinese J-35 are all vying for the attention of potential buyers, especially in Asian countries. Although Western and Chinese models are produced in larger numbers and boast impressive features, the Russian design is gradually strengthening its position.

Analysts point out that one of the key reasons for growing interest in the Su-57 is Moscow’s flexible export policy. Unlike the US, which strictly controls the software and overseas operation of its aircraft, Russia offers more lenient terms for foreign customers. This allows countries that want to avoid external restrictions to view the Su-57 as a viable alternative.

Experts are paying particular attention to the situation in Asia. For India and Vietnam, acquiring the Chinese J-35 is complicated by territorial disputes with Beijing. Under these circumstances, the Russian fighter presents a more acceptable option. In addition, for North Korea, the Su-57 is effectively the only fifth-generation aircraft available, as other manufacturers are unwilling to cooperate with Pyongyang.

Experts emphasize that Russia’s interest in supplying Su-57s to North Korea is driven by a desire to strengthen its ally’s defense capabilities in the Far East. In their view, this could reduce the burden on Russia’s own armed forces in the region.

Overall, despite the technological advantages of the F-35 and J-35, the Russian Su-57 is able to carve out its own niche in the market thanks to a combination of technical features and political flexibility. For a number of countries seeking independence in defense matters, this factor becomes decisive when choosing a new combat aircraft.
