A closed presentation of the updated 2026 Opel Astra took place in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Journalists had the opportunity to be the first to evaluate the changes, which affect both the appearance and the technical components of the popular hatchback. The new version signals Opel’s ambition to move upmarket, offering features that were previously reserved for higher-end segments.
The car’s exterior has become noticeably more modern. The front now sports the signature Vizor panel, redesigned in a sharper, more high-tech style. The design team drew inspiration from the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo concept, and this influence can be clearly seen in the car’s lines and details. One striking highlight is the illuminated Opel logo—a feature previously seen only on flagship models like the Grandland. The horizontal and vertical LED strips create a distinctive light signature that emphasizes Astra’s individuality and ensures it stands out on the road, even at night.
Lighting technology
One of the key innovations is the Intelli-Lux HD headlight system, featuring over 50,000 LEDs. This technology provides not only highly precise illumination but also instantly responds to changes in road conditions. The headlights automatically adjust the light beam according to turns, weather, and reflective signs, preventing glare for other drivers. In real-world use, the system impresses with its smooth and rapid mode switching—such solutions are extremely rare in the compact car segment.
Interior and comfort
The interior of the 2026 Opel Astra has also undergone significant changes. The center console is now made from a more practical material that resists fingerprints and is scratch-resistant. The glossy black finish has been replaced with a matte surface, improving both ergonomics and the cabin’s visual appeal. Intelli-Seats, included as standard equipment, feature a unique central depression inspired by bicycle saddles. This design reduces tailbone pressure and boosts comfort on long journeys. After just a few minutes behind the wheel, it becomes clear that this is more than just a marketing gimmick—the seats truly are comfortable.
For those who value maximum comfort, AGR seats are available with enhanced adjustment options, massage function, heating, and ReNewKnit upholstery. This innovative textile feels like suede, is made entirely from recycled materials and is itself recyclable. The Greenovation concept is evident throughout the interior: the manufacturer uses eco-friendly fabrics and finishes, reducing the carbon footprint without sacrificing style or quality.
Electric version
The main technical innovation is the fully electric Astra Electric. The model is equipped with a 58 kWh battery, allowing for a range of up to 454 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. A notable addition is the V2L function, which lets you use the battery’s energy to power external devices—convenient for travel and outdoor activities. The vehicle’s practicality remains: trunk capacity reaches 1,339 liters in the five-door version and 1,634 liters in the Sports Tourer wagon. The rear seats fold in a 40:20:40 split, making it easier to transport bulky items.
If you didn’t know, Opel is one of the oldest car manufacturers in Germany, founded in 1862. The company is part of the Stellantis group and is known for its innovations in the mass market segment. Astra is the brand’s key model, produced since 1991 and repeatedly awarded European automotive prizes. In recent years, Opel has been actively introducing eco-friendly technologies and expanding its lineup of electric vehicles, focusing on making modern solutions accessible to a wide audience.
