In recent years, Formula 1 broadcasts have increasingly focused on celebrities and drivers’ companions, a trend that has drawn mixed reactions from championship participants. Carlos Sainz, representing Williams, shared his perspective on this approach, noting that such coverage distracts from key moments of the competition.
During a discussion on a popular Spanish sports show, Sainz pointed out that, in a recent race, viewers did not see any of his several overtakes in the final laps. According to him, important highlights were missed because the cameras were pointed at the stands and guests in the paddock.
The driver expressed confusion about why broadcast directors choose to show the reactions of famous guests and drivers’ partners during the most intense moments of the race. He believes such shots are only relevant when they genuinely add to the on-track action, but should not take the place of sports event coverage.
Sainz also noted that in recent years, the number of VIP guests in the paddock area has grown significantly. He said it’s sometimes hard to move around due to the crowds, and many team members have to use bikes or scooters to get around.
Reflecting on the past, the Spanish driver noted that 10-15 years ago the atmosphere in the paddock was less intense, but now he prefers the current level of activity. However, in his opinion, it is important to remember that most people in this area are working, and the organization of the space should take this into account.
Overall, Carlos Sainz called for a more balanced approach to race coverage so that fans can follow the main events on the track without being distracted by secondary details. He emphasized that the interest in Formula 1 is largely tied to the dynamics and competition on the track, not the reactions of spectators and guests.
