Friendship After Love: How Infanta Elena and Luis Astolfi Maintained Their Close Relationship

Secret Romance of Infanta Elena: What's Really Behind Her Connection with the Famous Horseman?

Luis Astolfi received a prestigious award — personally presented to him by Infanta Elena. Their long-standing friendship and shared passions unite them. Discover the details of their unique bond.

The recent absence of Infanta Elena from the regatta in Sanxenxo, where she usually accompanies her father, King Juan Carlos I, has raised questions. However, the reason turned out to be legitimate: the eldest daughter of the honorary monarchs traveled to the south of the country, to Seville, to support one of the people closest to her — the famous equestrian Luis Astolfi.

Instead of attending family events in Galicia, where her father was accompanied by his grandson Froilán, the Infanta chose to be present at the tribute to her longtime friend. This gesture once again highlighted the special bond that has existed between them for several decades.

An Award from an Old Friend

In early November, a landmark event for the equestrian world took place in the Andalusian capital. As part of the I Ciudad de Sevilla Show Jumping Competition, the city council and the Real Club Pineda organized a ceremony in honor of Luis Astolfi. The distinguished athlete, a four-time Olympian, was presented with the prestigious ‘Giraldiyo’ award. It was Infanta Elena who had the honor of presenting the trophy, adding a special warmth and significance to the moment.

However, the trip to Seville was not limited to official events. After the ceremony, Infanta Elena, Luis Astolfi, and their mutual friends headed to one of Her Royal Highness’s favorite restaurants in the city—La Grulla. The group enjoyed a gastronomic evening, ordering the restaurant’s signature dishes: zucchini salad, Turkish-style eggs, and roast beef with mashed potatoes. For dessert, they shared French toast with vanilla ice cream and lemon tart.

More Than Friendship? The Story of Their Relationship

Some time after the event, Astolfi shared his feelings. He admitted it was a great honor for him to receive the award from the Infanta. Speaking about the nature of their current relationship, the equestrian described it as a ‘tender lifelong friendship’ filled with mutual understanding and support. He also confirmed that he often serves as an advisor to the Infanta on equestrian matters. According to him, while she has trainers in Madrid, he is always ready to help during competitions. Astolfi praised her skills, calling her a wonderful rider and a very attentive student, always willing to listen to advice.

Their story began long before their current friendship. In 1986, when the Infanta was 23, she started a romance with a young, promising athlete from Seville. Luis Astolfi became her first serious love, and their relationship lasted about three years. There was never any official confirmation of their affair, nor any exact details about their breakup. According to one version, Queen Sofía opposed their union, not considering the horseman a suitable match for her daughter, and her influence prevented the couple from reaching the altar.

Inseparable to this day

Nevertheless, after their breakup, Elena and Luis managed to maintain a remarkably warm and close relationship. They are often seen together at various events, displaying an unbreakable bond. This summer, they were spotted at a charity bullfight in Las Ventas and at the wedding of Astolfi’s son in Marbella. These appearances show that their connection is as strong as ever.

Astolfi himself is currently going through a new phase in life. He has temporarily stepped back from competitions due to a hand injury sustained in an accident, and he eagerly awaits the birth of his first grandchild. Despite personal changes, his friendship with Infanta Elena remains one of the few constants in his life—and in hers.

Notably, Infanta Elena—whose full name is Elena María Isabel Dominica de Silos de Borbón y Grecia—holds the title of Duchess of Lugo and is third in line to the Spanish throne, following her nieces, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. She was married to aristocrat Jaime de Marichalar, with whom she has two children: Felipe Juan Froilán and Victoria Federica. Their divorce in 2010 marked the first such case in the history of the Spanish royal family. Infanta Elena is known for her passion for equestrian sports, a love she inherited from her father, and she is an accomplished rider. She actively participates in official events, representing the Crown both in Spain and abroad. Her children, particularly in recent years, have frequently attracted media attention due to their behavior. Despite her public profile, the Infanta maintains a relatively private lifestyle, dedicating her free time to her hobbies and close friends, with Luis Astolfi holding a special place among them.
