In the evening at the Marina Bay circuit in Singapore, the second free practice session of the Formula 1 weekend got underway. Spanish driver Fernando Alonso topped the first session with the fastest time, leading the timesheets for the first time this season. He was followed by Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, while McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris took fifth and sixth places respectively, narrowly trailing the championship leaders.
Carlos Sainz, another representative from Spain, finished eighth, setting the fastest time on the medium tire compound. The second practice is considered crucial, as track conditions closely match those expected in qualifying and the race itself. Teams use this opportunity to collect as much data as possible and adjust their car setups accordingly.
The session began with the green light, and the drivers immediately headed out onto the track, testing various tire options. The head of one team noted that after technical issues with the brakes during the first practice, they hoped to make up for lost ground in the second. Progress by Carlos Sainz and the consistency of his car were particularly highlighted, although the pace is not yet at the level shown in Baku.
The Singapore Grand Prix is known for its unpredictability: in the past five years, five different drivers have taken victory here, including Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Sergio Perez, Carlos Sainz, and Lando Norris. For Max Verstappen, this is the only venue on the calendar where he has yet to win.
Before the event, only Red Bull and Mercedes introduced technical updates. Lando Norris admitted that Verstappen remains a very strong rival, while the latest upgrades have helped close the gap to the leaders. Charles Leclerc, in turn, realistically assessed Ferrari’s chances of winning this season, noting that McLaren could be the favorite not only in Singapore but also at the next event in Las Vegas.
McLaren is on the verge of securing its tenth constructors’ title: the team needs just 13 points at this stage to clinch it. Carlos Sainz expressed cautious optimism about the car’s increased downforce, although his performance in the first practice session was promising.
Fernando Alonso arrived in Singapore in excellent form, both personally and professionally. He has shown confidence and is enjoying his performances, despite some issues with the rear of the car.
The second practice session is underway, and all teams are working to prepare their cars as thoroughly as possible for qualifying and the race. The outcome of this session could have a significant impact on the balance of power in the fight for the 2025 season championship title.
