Right in the heart of Madrid, just steps away from the Royal Palace, there’s a true oasis for families with children. The playground in the Jardines de Lepanto has become a top favorite among locals. Spacious, peaceful and removed from busy roads, with a variety of play structures, well-kept greenery and good lighting—all this creates a setting where kids can feel safe and parents can relax with peace of mind.
However, not all of the city’s playgrounds can boast the same level of comfort. On the opposite end of the ranking is the playground at Tirso de Molina square. Local residents point not only to dirt and worn-out equipment, but also far more worrying issues: the constant presence of people drinking alcohol and using drugs, as well as dealers selling illegal substances. As a result, parents prefer to steer clear of this spot even if it’s close to home.
Safety and cleanliness concerns
A survey involving hundreds of Madrid residents found significant differences between neighborhoods across the city. In some parks—such as the one on Antonio González Porras street—visitors reported rats, resulting in extremely low scores. Other playgrounds with the worst ratings include those on Beneficencia, Corazón de María, Ministriles Chica, Sierra de Alquife, and paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza. Common complaints are a lack of greenery, outdated surfaces, too few benches, and not enough trash bins.
Many parents note that in summer, when temperatures rise in the city, the lack of trees and shade turns a simple walk into a real challenge. In some neighborhoods, children hardly ever visit playgrounds because of unsafe conditions.
Positive examples and hope for change
Despite numerous complaints, Madrid also has some successful examples. In addition to the top-rated Lepanto Garden, playgrounds on avenida de Valladolid, paseo de la Virgen del Puerto, in Casa de Campo park, on Parroco Eusebio Cuenca and Antracita streets, Villa de París square, Gasómetro street, and the famous El Retiro park all received high marks. Residents praise these places for their cleanliness, modern equipment, and pleasant atmosphere.
Experts believe that neglect in some playgrounds is partly due to a lack of attention from city authorities. While transport and housing issues are often openly discussed, the condition of public spaces for children tends to be overlooked. Nevertheless, this study has already drawn attention to the issue, and many hope the situation will start to improve.
A city for children: what’s next?
Madrid is a city of contrasts, and this is especially evident when it comes to its playgrounds. Some neighborhoods set an example to follow, while others are a cause for concern among parents. But with a little more attention, these spaces could become places of joy and safety for thousands of families. Now, much depends on how quickly local authorities respond to residents’ concerns and begin to change the situation.
