On the evening of September 29, the football match between teams from Valencia and Oviedo, which was supposed to conclude the seventh round of the national championship, was cancelled. The cause was adverse weather conditions: the region was placed under a red alert due to heavy rain and strong winds.
Organizers decided to postpone the match after extensive consultations with local authorities and security services. The team from Oviedo had arrived in the city the day before, prior to the highest alert being issued. Valencia players were also prepared to train that day, but plans had to be adjusted.
Recalling the events from eleven months ago, when the province had already faced the devastating impact of DANA, authorities once again implemented strict safety measures. All outdoor events in several municipalities, including the regional capital, were cancelled, and schools were closed on Monday.
The exact date for the rescheduled match has not yet been determined. However, as neither team is participating in European competitions, there is flexibility to select a new time for the game without causing additional scheduling issues.
The Valencia management had notified fans in advance about a possible match cancellation. This proved especially important, as nearly half of the spectators traditionally travel to the stadium from the suburbs. With restricted traffic and increased road controls, the risks to public order and safety would have risen significantly. Estimates suggest that around 25,000 people could have found themselves in a potentially dangerous situation.
Authorities emphasize that the health and safety of all participants and spectators remain the top priority. The clubs are continuing to monitor the situation and promise to announce a new match date as soon as it is agreed upon.
