Autumn in Madrid was illuminated by one of the year’s most iconic events in the social sphere. The annual ceremony for the ‘Royal Award for Civil Merit’ took place in the majestic halls of the Royal Palace. Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia personally presided over the event to honor those whose dedication and selflessness make Spain better, stronger, and more united. The atmosphere in the hall was filled with solemnity and genuine respect for the laureates—people whose everyday work often goes unnoticed, yet whose impact on society cannot be overstated.
This year, held under the motto ‘Essential Links: The Power of Public Initiatives,’ focused on projects that build strong bonds within communities and help address pressing local issues. The Royal Foundation for Social Development, which established this prestigious award, carried out a rigorous selection among hundreds of candidates from across the country. Three organizations whose work was recognized as the most significant and innovative reached the final. Their representatives, visibly moved, stepped onto the stage to receive recognition from the monarchs.
The 2025 laureates were three unique projects from different parts of Spain. The first award went to an organization from Sevilla (Andalusia), which developed an innovative program integrating teenagers from disadvantaged neighborhoods through sports and art, helping them find their path in life. The second prize was awarded to a project in Barcelona (Catalonia) that supports youth mental health and fights against the stigmatization of mental disorders. The third winner was an initiative group from Galicia, implementing a large-scale program to restore forests and clean up coastal areas, engaging hundreds of volunteers in its activities.
King Felipe, in his address to the audience, emphasized that it is precisely such initiatives that shape the true soul of the nation. Speaking from the heart rather than reading from notes, he pointed out that the strength of the state lies not only in economic indicators but also in the citizens’ ability to empathize, help one another, and work together for the common good. The monarch expressed deep gratitude to all the country’s volunteers and social workers. Queen Letizia, known for her close attention to social issues, warmly spoke with each of the honorees after the official part, showing genuine interest in the details of their work and the challenges they face. This event once again demonstrated the unbreakable bond between the Spanish monarchy and the people, as well as its commitment to supporting the most important and positive initiatives in society.
