Historic Reconquista-Era Monastery Opens to Visitors in Valencia: What to See and Entry Price

El misterio de los muros medievales: un tesoro de Valencia accesible para todos por una tarifa simbólica

Discover the Royal Monastery of Santa María del Puig, a gem of Valencian history. Learn about its role in the conquest of Valencia, explore Gothic halls and unique exhibits. Guided tours available for just €4.

In the northern part of the province of Valencia lies a unique historic complex that has witnessed one of the key events in the region’s medieval history. Its walls, built on a strategically important hilltop, have seen battles, ceremonies, and changing eras. Today, this monumental ensemble—blending architecture, art, and historical memory—is open to visitors.

This is the Real Monasterio de Santa María de El Puig, founded by order of King Jaime I to commemorate the victory that opened the way for the conquest of Valencia in the 13th century. In 1969, the complex was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. This Renaissance structure has preserved its defensive elements, including four towers, and over the centuries has served as a church, a prison, and a school. Nowadays, the complex hosts cultural events organized by the government of the Valencian Community.

Visitors can join a guided tour at an affordable price—just 4 euros. For groups of 30 or more, the cost is reduced to 3 euros per person, and children under eight are admitted free of charge. The tour route passes through inner courtyards adorned with stained glass and coats of arms. Guests will see works of art that tell the story of Valencia, including pieces by artists Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa and José Vergara.

The tour program includes visits to the Gothic church, the Royal Hall (Salón Real), and the Gothic Hall of Jaume I (Salón Gótico de Jaume I). The latter features an exact replica of the legendary monarch’s sword, as well as facsimile copies of medieval chronicles. The journey into the past continues in the Ceramics Hall (Salón de la Cerámica), where artifacts from the Roman and Iberian eras are on display. Historic furniture and interior decor offer insight into how the building maintained its significance over the centuries, while the blend of architectural styles—from Gothic to Renaissance—highlights its uniqueness.

Tours are led by qualified guides who provide detailed information on the purpose of each hall and the architectural features. The monastery can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday at 10:00, 11:00, 16:00, and 17:00, and on Sundays and public holidays at 12:00. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience one of the most important historical and artistic landmarks of the province of Valencia.
