33 New Speed Cameras on Spanish Roads: Unexpected Changes for Drivers

Government tightens speed control — new fines to be issued within a month

Spain has activated 33 new speed cameras on major roads. For the first month, drivers will only receive warnings; penalties follow after. This innovation affects 11 regions and could alter familiar travel routes.

The introduction of new speed cameras on Spanish roads means not only stricter monitoring for drivers, but also a real shift in familiar routes. The decision to launch 33 additional speed control points across 11 regions of the country has become one of the most notable road safety measures in recent years. Now, driving on many stretches of highway may suddenly result in a warning letter, and a month later – a fine.

The monitoring system covers key routes in Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Comunidad Valenciana, Madrid, Galicia, and Murcia. The new devices have been installed on roads in the provinces of Alicante, Asturias, Ávila, Cantabria, A Coruña, Las Palmas, León, Madrid, Málaga, Murcia, Pontevedra, Segovia, Sevilla, Tenerife, Toledo, Valencia, Valladolid, and Zaragoza. Each of these stretches is now under special surveillance.

First weeks — no fines

During the first month after the installation of the new speed cameras, violators will only receive an informational letter. This is a kind of transition period for drivers to get used to the new rules and adjust their driving style. After this period, the system will operate at full capacity: speeding will result in fines according to current regulations.

Particular attention has been paid to measurement accuracy. During the first year of operation, the new devices allow for a margin of error: for speeds up to 100 km/h, the error must not exceed 3 km/h, and for higher speeds, no more than 3%. This approach aims to reduce contentious cases and boost public trust in the system.

Where to expect changes

The locations for the new radar installations are not random. According to RUSSPAIN.com, priority was given to areas with higher accident rates and heavy traffic. In particular, more control points have appeared on roads connecting major cities and tourist destinations. This means that even familiar routes to work or the coast may now be closely monitored.

Drivers should pay attention to new signs and warnings that have appeared along the roads. In some cases, cameras register not only speeding but also other violations, which can lead to additional penalties.

Recent trends

In recent years, Spain has consistently strengthened road safety measures. In 2024 and 2025, dozens of new radars were installed, reducing the number of serious accidents in several areas. Similar initiatives are supported across other European countries, where automated speed enforcement is becoming the norm. In the coming years, the radar network is expected to expand further, along with the introduction of new technologies for greater road safety.
