Train drivers slow down en masse on Madrid-Barcelona line after Córdoba accident

What are Spanish railways keeping from their passengers

High-speed train drivers between Madrid and Barcelona have started reducing speed on a dangerous stretch. The move follows recent incidents and complaints about vibrations. Passengers are increasingly concerned about safety.

In recent days, train drivers on the high-speed rail line between Madrid and Barcelona have noticeably changed their behavior. After a recent incident involving an Iryo train near Adamuz, drivers are increasingly choosing to reduce speed along the section passing through Calatayud in the province of Zaragoza. This area had already attracted attention last summer, when both passengers and railway workers reported unusual vibrations and track irregularities, issues that are once again in the spotlight.

Although there have been no official orders to reduce speed, drivers are more frequently opting for a cautious approach of their own accord. In some cases, passengers are directly informed about the speed reduction, sparking concern and questions about the true condition of the infrastructure. Union representatives emphasize that this is not a coordinated initiative, but rather personal decisions by staff worried about safety.

Troubled section

The stretch between Madrid and Calatayud has long raised concerns among experts. Last summer, drivers appealed to management for a speed limit of 250 km/h on this segment, even though regulations allow trains to reach 300 km/h. The request was prompted by repeated complaints about shaking and the feeling of “bumps” beneath the wheels, which not only affect passenger comfort but could also signal more serious problems with the track bed.

Passengers on board the Iryo train during the recent incident described feeling strong jolts and a tense atmosphere in the carriages. Since then, train drivers have become even more attentive to track conditions, choosing to reduce speed in advance rather than take risks, especially in areas where anomalies have previously been reported.

Railway workers’ response

Train driver unions emphasize that reducing speed is at the discretion of each driver if they believe the situation calls for extra precautions. It is enough to notify the control center and explain the reasons. In recent days, such notifications have become more frequent, although no official statistics have been released yet.

Meanwhile, representatives of the railway infrastructure do not confirm a significant increase in such cases. However, rumors are circulating among railway workers that many drivers now choose to err on the side of caution, especially after their concerns this summer were not fully addressed.

Future plans

The Ministry of Transport has long been planning a major upgrade of the Madrid-Barcelona line to raise the top speed to 350 km/h. Work will begin specifically with the problematic section between Madrid and Calatayud, which currently sees the highest number of complaints and technical issues. For now, both passengers and drivers have to endure temporary inconveniences and remain vigilant.

The situation clearly shows that even on Spain’s most modern railways, safety remains a pressing issue. The determination of train operators to act as needed and prioritize safety over the timetable is commendable, but it also highlights the urgent need for changes in infrastructure management.
