As the summer heat gives way to pleasant coolness, southern Spain reveals a new, untouristy side. Far from the bustle of big cities, in the heart of olive groves, real treasures are hidden, one of which is Priego de Córdoba. This town, whose history dates back to prehistoric times, offers travelers more than just picturesque landscapes—it’s a deep dive into culture and history, where every stone breathes with centuries of the past.
A heart beating to the rhythm of water
Priego de Córdoba has rightfully earned its second name—“Ciudad del Agua.” Life here has always revolved around countless springs and fountains that generously bless this land. Water has shaped not only the landscape, but also the very character of this settlement, becoming the foundation for its prosperity in the Middle Ages, when it was renowned for its silk production. A rich heritage, dating back to the time of the Caliphate of Córdoba, is still evident today in the stunning architecture. The town’s streets are filled with splendid 17th–18th century buildings, creating the feel of an open-air living museum.
Spain’s answer to the Eternal City
The main symbol of this Andalusian town is the monumental water complex Fuente del Rey. This grand structure is often compared to the famous fountain in the Italian capital, and it truly rivals it in splendor. Construction of the fountain began back in the 16th century, but it took on its final form only in the 19th century, blending elements of late Baroque and Neoclassicism. The composition features three cascading pools adorned with mythological sculptures. At the center rises Neptune with his trident, surrounded by 139 jets of water streaming from mascarons. Both locals and tourists uphold a belief similar to that of the fountain’s Italian counterpart: to make a wish come true, you must toss a coin into the water. But here, it’s trickier—success requires landing the coin in a small niche with a statue of the Virgin Mary, adding a skillful twist to the ritual. Since 1984, this architectural masterpiece has been classified as a Site of Cultural Interest.
A Walk Through the Ages
The charm of Priego de Córdoba extends far beyond its magnificent fountain. Be sure to explore the Barrio de la Villa, the oldest part of the town, which has preserved its medieval Moorish layout. This area is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets lined with whitewashed houses, their walls and balconies overflowing with flowers. The walk ends at the Balcón del Adarve viewpoint, perched above a cliff with breathtaking views of the valley below. Nearby, you’ll find another significant landmark—Fuente de la Salud. According to legend, King Alfonso XI set up camp here before the decisive assault on Córdoba. Its ensemble, designed in the mannerist style and surrounded by picturesque scenery, makes it a perfect spot for peaceful relaxation and contemplation.
