Authorities Investigate Scandal at Pig Farm in Aragon: Serious Violations Found

New details emerge about animal welfare conditions on a Teruel farm

Cases of animal cruelty and unsanitary conditions have emerged in Aragon. Inspections revealed health hazards and breaches of standards. The situation could impact exports and the industry’s reputation.

A scandal involving a pig farm in the municipality of Castellote, in the province of Teruel, has sparked widespread attention in Spain. The controversy centers on evidence of animal cruelty and unsanitary conditions that could impact not only local residents but the entire national meat industry. Concerns over product safety and trust in Spain’s exports have resurfaced at the forefront.

The ARDE association (Animal Respect and Defence for the Environment) filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office regarding alleged crimes against animals, public health threats, and misleading advertising. During an investigation running from October 2025 to February 2026, cases were documented where live pigs were kept next to decomposing carcasses. Some animals suffered from severe diseases, had wounds caused by cannibalism, and showed signs of exhaustion and inflammation. Inspectors also noted the presence of flies, larvae, and rats in the facilities.

Problems in production

The farm, owned by Ganados La Yruela S.C., has two buildings and is designed for around 1,500 animals. According to ARDE, the company maintained ongoing exclusive business relations with Frigoríficos Costa Brava S.L., whose products are distributed to supermarkets across Spain and exported to dozens of countries. Representatives of Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods S.L.U. stated they did not own this farm and received their last deliveries at the end of 2025.

Video footage collected by animal rights activists shows pigs forced to live among carcasses, surrounded by insects and larvae. Several animals were found to suffer from severe lameness, hernias, purulent abscesses, and signs of exhaustion. Some were unable to move and appeared to be in agony. A veterinary examination commissioned by ARDE confirmed numerous and serious violations of welfare and sanitation standards, posing a risk of spreading dangerous infections, including viruses and bacteria that can be transmitted to humans.

Response and inspections

The investigation documented cases of deliberate cruelty: a farm worker repeatedly kicked pigs to make them move, causing fear and pain to the animals. Such actions violate European and Spanish regulations, which require daily inspection and immediate assistance for sick and injured animals, as well as housing conditions that prevent unnecessary suffering.

Previously, the farm held a Welfair certificate confirming compliance with animal welfare standards, but lost it in November 2025. The new owner attempted to obtain independent certification in March, but an audit on March 19 identified violations. Welfair representatives assured that meat from severely injured animals does not reach consumers and that product safety is guaranteed.

Differences in assessments

In March 2026, veterinary specialists from the Alcorisa Agricultural District Office conducted an inspection and found no violations regarding animal welfare or sanitary regulations. According to their report, at the time of inspection, the sanitary conditions and disposal of carcasses complied with the standards. Nevertheless, ARDE insists on the immediate closure of the farm, emphasizing that such cases are not isolated and highlight systemic issues in the industry, where animals are regarded as mere production units.

In recent years, Spain has repeatedly faced scandals involving violations at livestock enterprises. In 2024, similar cases were reported in Catalonia and Castilla-La Mancha, where unsanitary conditions and animal abuse sparked public outcry and led to the temporary shutdown of several farms. These incidents have prompted tighter controls and a review of industry standards, while also fueling discussions on the need for transparency and producer accountability.
